Microsoft Antitrust extended to 2011

Judge Colleen Kollar-Kotelly has extended her oversight of Microsoft's antitrust settlement by another 18 months, setting the new expiration date for May 12, 2011. Kollar-Kotelly acknowledged during a hearing today that this would be the second extension in under two years, but said that the company is "in a different and much better place" than before.

The judge's order comes only days after the US Department of Justice filed a request for the oversight to be extended. The DOJ apparently felt that Microsoft still had a ways to go before meeting the requirements originally set in 2002, and that 18 months would be plenty of time to finish up without having to grant further extensions. At the same time, a joint status report from Microsoft and the plaintiffs states that all parties felt that the required documentation is almost ready. "While the entire project has taken longer than any of the parties anticipated, the project is nearly complete," read the report.

The sanctions on Microsoft were originally set to expire in November 2007 and are aimed at preventing the company from retaliating against hardware vendors that ship computers with alternatives to Microsoft's software products. When it came time for the decree to be lifted, however, Judge Colleen Kollar-Kotelly decided that Microsoft failed to provide protocol specification documents to competitors as required by the agreement. Because of this, she extended the oversight until November of 2009. (An additional set of sanctions mandating interoperability API licensing had already been extended for another two years.)

As part of the new extension, Microsoft and the states involved in the settlement will hold a status meeting on August 5, 2009, with a joint status report due to Kollar-Kotelly on or before July 31.

Oracle has announced it is purchasing Sun Microsystems for just over $7 billion.

Oracle has announced it is purchasing Sun Microsystems for just over $7 billion. The official word from Oracle is that the purchase gives it two key assets - Java and Solaris - but open sourcerers will understandably be more interested in MySQL and OpenOffice.org, two apps that form core parts of many free software installations.

Although MySQL and Oracle clearly occupy two very different spaces in the database industry, Oracle's ownership is likely to make many sysadmins uneasy about its long-term future - are we going to see increased closed-source extensions? Does Oracle have any interest in continuing the product at all?

The questions get even muddier when you start considering apps such as OpenOffice.org or VirtualBox, which lie squarely outside Oracle's core competencies and may prove of little interest to the company. Perhaps Novell's Go OO spin-off isn't looking quite so bad now, and equally we may see more MySQL forks like Drizzle that keep the database true to its roots.

What do you think - does this spell trouble for MySQL and a grim future for OOo and VirtualBox, could this takeover finally make Java the success it deserves to be, or is this just Oracle legitimately expanding further into the Linux space?

Comcast to bring cable service to the Internet

Comcast is expanding their cable service by porting it to the most logical next step: the Internet. Starting soon, the cable and Internet giant will be making their cable television content available as streams to their paying customers, giving them access to any standard or premium programming their subscription entitles them to watch. Initially, Comcast says the service will be free to anyone who already pays for cable content. In the future, however, they mention it could become a paid service.

The company could facilitate a lot of content online, given that they already deal with just about every mainstream content provider around. Down the road, it seems likely that Comcast could even enter into direct competition with the likes of Netflix, offering Internet-only streams for a charge.

This also plays an interesting part in recurring concerns with ISPs and bandwidth caps. It is easy to see how the company could enforce bandwidth limits, but only for content ?outside? their own network, effectively thwarting the competition. Comcast might never do that, but it certainly seems like a possibility.

Mozilla releases Firefox 3.0.9, fixes nine vulnerabilities

Mozilla has issued an update to its Firefox browser today, version 3.0.9, fixing a vulnerability rated as critical in addition to eight moderate or less severe flaws. The one critical flaw involves a memory corruption problem that could be exploited to run arbitrary code, while the two other high-risk flaws involve same-origin violations.

Firefox 3.0.9 also addresses a number of stability issues, including a problem where a corrupt local database caused the browser to "lose" its stored cookies. All changes are detailed in Mozilla's release notes here. The update comes as Mozilla prepares to release the fourth beta of Firefox 3.5 sometime later this week, which should bring significant improvements to JavaScript rendering speeds along other new features.

Airtel Launches 16 Mbps Broadband In India

Bharti Airtel has launched 16 Mbps broadband in the country.

This service, powered by Airtel's Carrier Ethernet Network, will be initially available in Delhi NCR, Chennai and Bangalore with phased roll-out in Hyderabad, Pune, Mumbai and Kolkata.

K Srinivas, Joint President, Telemedia Services, Bharti Airtel said, "Airtel has constantly strived to innovate and deliver high quality products to its broadband customers. We are the leading private broadband service provider in the country and pioneered 8 Mbps broadband. It gives us great pleasure now to be able to introduce the fastest, wired broadband service on DSL. We will be able to offer 16 Mbps broadband to 70% of the households in the 3 cities of Delhi NCR, Chennai and Bangalore."

Airtel delivers its broadband service to customers through a fibre backbone of Carrier Ethernet Network with last mile delivery on copper using ADSL2+ technology. This technology enables ultra high-speed broadband which is scalable and affordable.

Customers have 2 tariff plans to choose from -

- Speed Combo 2999 - receive 16 Mbps broadband speed with monthly data transfer limit of 20 GB along with a fixed line connection at Rs. 2999 per month.

- Speed Combo 4999 - receive 16 Mbps broadband speed with monthly data transfer limit of 50 GB along with a fixed line connection at Rs. 4999 per month.

I think it is very costly. What do you think?

YouTube launching premium section with movies, TV shows

Google has announced that it will partner with major movie studios to stream a number of full-length films and TV shows for free on YouTube. The studios involved in the launch of this premium content section will include Sony, CBS, MGM, Lionsgate, Starz, and the BBC. The movies will be ad-supported, and ad revenue will be shared with the content owners. Those who love YouTube's user-generated video offerings should not fret, however, as those will remain on the site separate from the premium offerings.

Google has been growing its collection of full-length movies as of late, with MGM announcing in November of 2008 that it would begin adding some of its films to YouTube, starting with films like The Magnificent Seven and Bulletproof Monk. Then, earlier this month, rumors spread that Sony was working on a similar deal to add films to YouTube. Now, with MGM, Sony, and a handful of others on board, YouTube has taken a giant step in the right direction to figuring out how to monetize the site.

The premium-content section comes as some analysts predict that YouTube will lose almost $500 million this year due to bandwidth consumption, licensing fees, the difficulty in monetizing content, and other expenses. "In our view, the issue for YouTube going forward is to increase the percentage of its videos that can be monetized (likely through more deals with content companies) and to drive more advertiser demand through standardization of ad formats and improved ad effectiveness," Credit Suisse analysts Spencer Wang and Kenneth Sena said earlier this month.

So far, it looks like that premonition is coming true. The launch of the premium content section of YouTube will come with a site redesign to highlight the changes while keeping YouTube's main focus on user-generated clips. YouTube says that it plans to sprinkle video ads inside of the movie streams like Hulu (and unlike the rest of YouTube, which largely relies on ads being placed around the video on the page). Unfortunately, those outside the US will have to wait for the studios to like you again, as the premium content will be limited to US viewers only.

The move marks a more friendly relationship between YouTube and the studios, who have historically been wary of the ease with which users could upload copyrighted clips—indeed, that is the crux of Viacom's $1 billion lawsuit against YouTube. It will also put YouTube more directly in competition with the NBC-owned Hulu, which already streams a wide variety of full-length movies and TV shows. Hulu's carefully sandboxed approach to online video has been very attractive to content owners as of late, but YouTube is still the far more popular site. Premium content is what will help both YouTube and the studios make money online, and if there's one thing studios like, it's making money.

Windows Mobile 6.5 to launch on May 11

Microsoft TechEd 2009 is this year's iteration of the company's conference that gives "technical education" to developers and IT Professionals. Traditionally, Microsoft gives more insight on the latest versions of its various products, and according to the Windows Mobile Team Blog, the next release of Windows Mobile will be making its official debut at the event. Windows Mobile 6.5's launch is less than a month away, on May 11:

Stephanie Ferguson, GM of Business Experiences at Microsoft's Mobile Communications Business is going to deliver the kick off launch presentation of Windows Mobile 6.5 on Monday, May 11th at 1:00PM - 2:15PM. This Tech Ed 2009 session focuses on one of the biggest launches in the history of Windows Mobile - Windows Mobile 6.5. It is targeted at both IT Professionals and Developers, with a cool demo and an outline of great stuff to come.

When Microsoft first officially unveiled 6.5 in February, our first impressions of the new OS were mixed, but we are reserving complete judgment until we can get our hands on the final version. As we saw in March with the tweaking of the honeycomb UI, Microsoft has been continuously tweaking 6.5, so there are still things to talk about, beyond what we saw in February.

That said, devices with Windows Mobile 6.5 won't start to appear until the fall, but at least 6.5 will be considered complete, and Microsoft's main focus will be able to turn to 7.0. Windows Mobile 7 is expected to be ready sometime next year, possibly in April.

Right on schedule, the Bluetooth Special Interest Group is preparing to launch the Bluetooth 3.0 specification on April 21. A list of chip-makers who are on board with the updated spec has not yet been made public, but it's expected to be available when the formal announcement is made later this month.

Bluetooth 3.0 will bring with it dramatically-improved file transfer speeds by using 802.11 technology (not technically WiFi, which is a certified version of 802.11 standards) that will enable the transfer of much larger files. The previous spec was fine for the transfer of more bite-sized data, like contact info or calendar items, but as mobile devices evolve to become our entertainment centers on-the-go, a speed improvement will certainly be helpful for transferring things like video and music collections.

For those curious, the Bluetooth 3.0 + High Speed standard works by using two compatible Bluetooth modules that coordinate a switch to 802.11 (without having to join a WiFi network) to move the bulk files. Once a file-transfer is complete, the devices coordinate a switch back to the slower and backwards-compatible 3.0Mbps rate of earlier Bluetooth releases, which consumes less power and bandwidth.

Once the new standard is announced by the Bluetooth SIG, it likely won't be long before we see devices with Bluetooth 3.0 built-in. Of course, when you have battery-sucking phones like the iPhone that need to be plugged in and synced every day already, there seems like less of a need for such high-speed file transfers, but everyone else using Bluetooth to sync files will no doubt be happy with the improvements.

There has been a lot of talk about Office 14, the codename for Office 2007's successor, but many have forgotten that before the next version is released, Microsoft is scheduled to release the second service pack for Office 2007. We've only heard snippets of what's coming, but now we've got something a bit of a more official, courtesy of the WSUS Product Team Blog:

Service Pack 2 for the 2007 Office System will be made available to Windows Server Update Services in April, classified as a service pack. Service Pack 2 includes some significant work, including: built-in ability to save as ODF & PDF formats, improvements to Outlook's performance and calendar reliability, significant bug fixes for charts in core Office applications, the ability for client service packs to be removed using an uninstall tool, and a host of customer-requested improvements to the Office Server products. It is also a rollup of all fixes that have previously been released for Office 2007 products.
