You might have noticed something new in orkut. Some of your friends may have little icons on their profile pages, and you may start seeing some updates from friends as well. These are our new orkut badges!

Badges are another way for you to express yourself on orkut, with different sets of badges for users that engage with orkut in different ways. For example, if you've been on orkut for a long time, you might get an Early User badge! Or, if you created a popular promotion, you might get a Promoter badge. Once you win a badge, it's up to you if you want to display it on your profile or not.

There will be lots of badges available for you to collect, based on your interactions with orkut. Here's an initial list of badges that we plan to make available over the coming weeks. Can you collect them all?

Also, keep an eye out for more, because who knows what other badges might show up around here? Imagination is the limit! :)

Five months after its unveiling, the Nokia X5 is finally hitting our shores. The X5 slider phone looks like a cross between a Nokia E series smartphone and an XpressMusic handset. Nokia X5 is on sale for Rs. 10,499.

It sports a 5 megapixel camera with LED Flash, 2.36 inch QVGA display and a slide out QWERTY keypad. Storage is covered by a 200 MB internal memory and bundled 2 GB microSD memory card.

The phone sports dedicated music keys, and comes with a year's worth of unlimited music from Ovi Music. Nokia X5 music oriented features include a built in 'Surprise me!' option that plays random tracks when the phone is spun around. 'Playlist DJ' feature allows playlist creation tools. When music is not playing, you can shake the phone to see the number of new SMSes in the Inbox.

If you are amongst the few who still give a damn about Orkut, you might have noticed something fishy going on over the past few hours. A large number of users are randomly flooding their friend’s scrapbooks (Orkut’s equivalent of Facebook Wall) with the following message:

It doesn’t take a genius to figure out that the “Bom Sabado!” messages are automatically generated by a script. However, it is not clear if this is simply a script exploiting vulnerability in Orkut, or have the accounts sending the automated scraps been compromised.
If you are amongst those affected, it’s highly recommended that you follow the steps highlighted below:

Switch to the “older version” of Orkut.
Log out of Orkut.
Clean your browser’s cache and cookies.
Log in and change your password and security question.

If you haven’t been affected yet, it is strongly advised that you avoid Orkut until the issue has been resolved. I managed to trigger the same exploit while researching this article. Recently other high profile websites like Twitter and YouTube also fell victim to XSS attacks.
This is a developing story; we will update this topic as soon as we learn more. Don’t forget to share your experience, if you have also been affected.

India presses for BlackBerry access

India today began issuing letters to the country’s telecoms operators ordering them to make BlackBerry corporate e-mail and messenger services accessible to interception by security agencies or risk suspension of their licences.

The move marks the first step by the government towards implementing an ultimatum from the Ministry of Home Affairs on Thursday warning that India would block the services by the end of this month unless they were opened for monitoring.

“The issue is that the service providers have legal obligations to the government under their licences,” said one industry executive.

The legal obligations of Research In Motion, the Canadian company that makes the devices, were to the service providers, he said.

The order poses a dilemma for India’s 15 mobile operators, including industry leader Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Essar, the number three, as the technology for BlackBerry services is controlled by RIM.

The move also raises the temperature for RIM, which is locked in tense negotiations with the government over its encrypted enterprise e-mail service and messenger function amid concerns these might be misused by terrorists.

Spurred on by similar moves against RIM by the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia, India is keen to tighten security ahead of the Commonwealth Games in October and to curb terrorist attacks originating from neighbouring Pakistan.

India is the world’s fastest growing mobile phone market with about 600m users and 10m-20m new customers being added every month.

While BlackBerry users number only about 1m, they are among the highest spending customers in a market in which growing competition is squeezing margins.

One operator said yesterday it had received a letter from the government ordering it to suspend the corporate e-mail or messenger service by the end of this month if a solution to the security issue was not reached. Operators were instructed to communicate the order to RIM.

India sets stringent conditions for mobile licence holders, requiring them to make all communications through their networks open to interception by security agencies.

Failure to do so can lead to the seizure of the operator’s network and equipment by the authorities and the suspension of the licence.

However, mobile operators say they doubt they have the technology to selectively block BlackBerry services.

The providers could instead suspend all domestic BlackBerry handsets from the network, but this would not prevent international users of the devices from using roaming services in India.

It is difficult to detect what type of handset is being used when an international customer enters a market using roaming services.

The government is expected to use the BlackBerry issue to put pressure on other internet-based communications systems, such as Google and Skype.

The names of the two internet providers were mentioned as next in line for scrutiny at a meeting last month between government officials and telecoms and internet service provider associations.

RIM’s stock fell 1.2 per cent to C$55.77 yesterday in early trade on the Toronto Stock Exchange.

Oracle’s threat to Google mobile push

The legal war over software rights that Oracle launched against Google late on Thursday could hamper the internet company’s successful push into the smartphone market, industry analysts warned on Friday.

Oracle’s aggressive move was also a “nuclear deterrent” that would spread much more widely across the mobile devices industry, with long-term implications for many handset makers and carriers, said Mark Driver, an analyst at Gartner.

The lawsuit, filed in federal court in San Francisco, accuses Google of patent and copyright infringement over the inclusion of parts of Oracle’s Java software in its Android smartphone operating system.

Android, which Google makes available free of charge, has been taken up by handset makers including Motorola and HTC, and in the most recent quarter phones carrying the software overtook Apple’s iPhone in global sales.

Oracle acquired rights to Java, a set of tools that make it easier for software developers to write applications that run on many different operating systems, as part of its purchase of Sun Microsystems earlier this year.

The lawsuit shows that Oracle will seek to make more money from the rights to the widely used Java than Sun did, analysts said.

“You’re definitely going to get a stronger licence enforcement policy – and rightly so, perhaps,” said Al Hilwa, an analyst at IDC.

The lawsuit also serves as a warning to handset makers that are using Android and could tilt the balance in favour of other operating systems, including Microsoft’s Windows Phone 7 software, which is due to be launched later this year, Mr Hilwa said.

If Google is forced to pay Oracle for the use of its technology, it could lead it to charge for Android, also making the software less attractive to handset makers, he added.

Many handset makers already have a licence that allows them to use Java. The prospect that Android would continue to grow fast raised the danger for Oracle that it would lose its power to charge a royalty on many new handsets, said Mr Driver.

However, some experts also warned that Oracle’s lawsuit could backfire, encouraging companies to look for alternatives to the Java technology.

At the time it bought Sun, Oracle executives said they would tread carefully in how they exercised their Java rights, since a heavy-handed approach could undermine the software’s standing as a de facto industry standard.

Legal battles over patents are rare between the technology industry’s leading players. Most maintain large portfolios of rights and have enough mutual self-interest to agree broad cross-licensing deals that give companies access to each others’ patents.

Oracle’s attack on Google highlights the internet company’s relatively weak patent portfolio, Mr Driver said.

If you don’t want to become the next target, it is highly recommended for you to safeguard your IP address against any of the unwanted attention, including the prying eyes of copyright owners. Although consumer groups like the EFF are doing their best to protect those accused, it’s better to make both your and their lives easier from the very beginning.

What people usually do today to protect themselves from troubles is using VPNs and Tor routers, though the latter is actually designed for web browsing rather than peer-to-peer, because in this case the data consumption rates reduce the connection speeds for other users.

However, there exist another simple and convenient way to protect yourself. It is the use of proxy, which will also allow you to hide your IP address while downloading illegal content with networks like BitTorrent.

It’s not hard to explain how it works, because it’s fairly simple. Even the newcomers to this digital world will understand a few easy steps they need to take.

First of all, you need to find a proxy server address. Just search the web for the lists of those, there are a lot. However, note that some of them are free, while some demand for a modest monthly fee.

Then launch the BitTorrent client you use for downloading and find the tab “connections” somewhere in preferences. For example, in uTorrent you go to options > preferences > connection.

There you need to type in the proxy server address you’ve found on the first step. First select “HTTP” from the drop down menu box located under “Proxy Server” line, then type in the IP address of the proxy server you want to use where it says “Proxy.” Bring your attention to the last 4 digits after the semicolon – they correspond to the port, which you need to enter in the “Port” option. For instance, you might have selected 192.168.135.54:8080.

That’s about it. Just click “OK” at the bottom of the window and your proxy preferences are configured. You can now sleep peacefully and be sure you won’t find yourself among those lists that are now submitted to ISPs in order to reveal the real identities of the infringers.

Tokyo, Japan – July 1, 2010 – Toshiba Corporation ("Toshiba") and Intel KK ("Intel") announced today that they will jointly commercialize an educational-use tablet PC designed to facilitate learning in compulsory education. Toshiba will launch the new CM1 tablet PC for educational use in the beginning of August, 2010 in the Japanese market. Going forward, the two companies plan to collaborate in various ways to foster ICT environments in schools.

The CM1 has been specially developed to be commercialized for educational purposes by Intel, which promotes ICT[1] education on a global basis, and by Toshiba, which has technologies and expertise for notebook PCs. The monitor rotates 180 degrees and has a touch screen LCD that supports pen input, allowing students to practice handwriting. The PC also has a handle to make it easy to carry around at school.

Efforts to Expand ICT Environment in Schools

Toshiba, together with sales channel, Toshiba Information Equipment Co., Ltd., in addition to developing mobile PCs for education, also provides educational solutions for classrooms designed for PC-based learning and networking. Online piracy was hit on the last day of June by seizure of several websites accused of copyright infringement. The accusations were brought by copyright authorities. Some of the accused sites offered unauthorized copies of the new Twilight movie “Eclipse”, placing an ad “watch “Eclipse” for free.

The third movie of saga has had an incredible opening, with grossing over $30 million from its single midnight show on June, 30th. This made it hold the new record within the industry as biggest midnight gross ever. However, next morning one could see the other side of that coin: the pitch “Watch “Eclipse” movie online for free” was ranked in the top 10 search terms online.

Walt Disney Studios announced a battle that morning – box-office money against illegal online downloads – in California, right near the heart of the entertainment industry hurt by online piracy. The announcement said that operation “In Our Sites” was going to be a coordinated effort by US ICE and NIPRCC, aimed at identifying and closing down sites engaging in illegal activities.

The operation began from the seizure of several domain names of sites offering first-run films, usually within mere hours of their releases in theatres. Visitors to those websites are going to face a page featuring the logos of the FBI explaining the situation. At least, that’s what officials said.

The seizures were carried out after undercover agents downloaded different fresh movies from the accused websites. The list included fresh releases of “Sex and the City 2” and “Iron Man 2.” In addition, residential search warrants came alongside with the seizure in several areas, including New Jersey, Washington, and New York.

After the abovementioned announcement was made in regards to “Eclipse”, some industry’s executives voiced out their opinion over the reason why Americans should care. The main arguments were, of course, money and jobs losses.

The results of the action taken will be estimated by its ability to get sustained over time, because it may turn into yet another big stir by the government, followed by dropping this initiative out of sight. However, most observers agree that such attempts to stop piracy will most likely result in considerable expense passed on to the consumers (whom else?)

Introduction to Azureus

Azureus is a BitTorrent client that can handle multiple torrents very well and offers a whole host of features that don't come with the original BitTorrent client.

If you look at the picture I provided of the main Azureus screen you will see that it looks like a lot of P2P software. It is divided into two main sections:
1) downloading torrents

2) seeding torrents

As I mentioned earlier, anybody with 100% of the file who is still uploading is a seed.

If you look at the picture again, at the first torrent file being seeded, you will see it has a share ratio of 0.739. This means that I have not yet uploaded as much as I have downloaded, anything over 1.000 is a good share ratio as it makes sure that I'm not leeching from this torrent and I am spreading it around like it has been spread to me.

The first thing you will be asked to do is to provide information on your upload speeds and what you'd like to limit it at. Do not try to cheat the system and limit your upload speed to very little, as it will backfire on you and give you slow downloads and eventually could get you banned from a tracker if you are suspected of leeching.

After you have configured your Azureus port and upload settings, you can now begin downloading files. To download files visit a torrent link site. All you have to do is find a link to a torrent file, click that link and it will automatically download. Usually the download would begin immediately and may be slow to start. After you have built up a lot of connections usually the downloads begin to speed up, as does your uploading.

Health

Azureus shows the health of your connections using smiley's. The pic I provided can be gotten with a single right click in the download list in Azureus. It shows clearly what each smiley means. This feature proves to be quite useful as if for some reason a port becomes unreachable, then the smiley will change, whereas with other clients, you might just think that its slowing down and will speed up later, when really the problem may be with your port and not with the torrent or tracker. After a download has started, usually it will go from gray to yellow and then after a little while to green if everything is OK. A lot of users report getting a yellow smiley all the time, but their torrents remain active and transfers keep going. Excessive usage on one port, like for example, using more than one torrent at a time, could result in the health state changing on a torrent.

Downloading File Details

While a file is downloading, right click and click Show Details. As you can see I've blocked out some information on mine as I don't want to go requesting permission from the tracker I was using before I post this guide. Therefore I have removed the filename, Tracker URL, Hash and the file Comment. On your screen you will see these details. Certain areas are important here like Share Ratio. As you can see my Share Ratio for this file is just 0.217. This is a bad ratio but expected while the file is still downloading. When the file finishes downloading, users are expected to keep the seeding going until the ratio goes over 1.000. You will notice the Update Tracker button. Clients have to update the tracker on the parts of files they have and other such things, this button is just here in case you wish to update immediately, however if you look across the way, you will that there is already a countdown to next update. When you are seeding, there is a slightly different detail as you will see now.

Seeding File Details

While seeding the details have only minor differences. If you have a file seeding, right click it and click Show Details. One minor but noticeable difference is there is no time remaining, and obviously not because you are uploading the file and not downloading it. So it has been replace by the infinity symbol. You can change max upload to whatever you want, higher if you wish to spread the file to more users. If you click the Details tab you will see all the IP Addresses you are currently connected too and details on bandwi**h you are using to send or receive parts from that user. If you click the Pieces tab you will see pieces that you are currently downloading. The Files tab, we will see later.
3.4. Share Ratio.

Time for just a little word on file ratios. A ratio over 1.000 means that you have uploaded more than you have downloaded and this is a good ratio. I have seen users with ratios over 10.000, that's amazing. Users like that are vital to BitTorrent, they keep torrents alive and fast for a long time. Obviously enough, to improve your ratio on a torrent, keep it uploading even after it is finished downloading. This is something that is expected at minimum from users, so people should really stick to more than the minimum or don't use BitTorrent at all. I understand that some users are afraid of uploading a lot because maybe their ISP will be unhappy about that, or they are afraid there is monitoring going on of people who are uploading. While these seem legit reasons not to upload much, it is not good enough. If a user cannot do the minimum, then that user should not use BitTorrent. It sounds cruel, but its the only way to keep torrents alive. This is P2P, this is not a download free for all. Some sites keep a share ratio of members, over a long time it can be very hard to keep a good ratio, but if you make sure each torrent you download has a ratio of over 1.000 when you finish uploading, then your overall ratio should stay ok.
3.5. Download/Upload Priority.

As you might have seen by now, you can change the priority of a torrent by right clicking it and just changing it. However, if you are only downloading one torrent at a time, or seeding one at a time, then changing the priority shouldn't really do anything. This feature is only for people who download and seed multiple torrents at once.
3.6. Selective File Downloading.

One of my favorite things about Azureus is the ability to select some files in the torrent not to be downloaded. To do this you must right click on the download and click Show Details. Click the Files tab and find a file that you don't want to be download, right click it and set the priority to Do not download. This can be pretty handy in some situations.

Mobile Updates : Nokia N85 Firmware v20.175

Nokia has just rolled out a new firmware for the Nokia N85, one of the best handset in the Nseries lineup. The v20.175 firmware, up from v11, brings in bug fixes and improvements along with the standby email plugin to show your emails on the standby screen. Other additions include turning controls which now allows you to flip to silence incoming calls alarms, internet telephony set up and an email wizard to setup your Nokia Email or Nokia Messaging.

Details as to the actual changes are thin as of now, but you can go on to update without any fear as the device is still hackable, in case you care. The new firmware is available over-the-air (OTA) by simply pressing *#0000# from the standby screen and checking for updates. (Detailed guide on how to update OTA here). The phone features user data preservation (UDP) so your data should be fine even after the update, however a backup never hurts. The update should also be available via the windows only Nokia Software Updater.

MPAA is About to Kill the Record Button on Your TV

If you thought that the Broadcast Flag is a finally dead idea, you’d be wrong. As the reports say, the FCC has adopted SOC (Selectable Output Control), which means that it will be they, not you, who chooses what shows can be recorded on your TV.

The Broadcast Flag had a history within the years. Back in 2005 the American Library Association applied to the court of Appeals against the FCC over it. That happened because the FCC made an attempt to put in a broadcast flag allowing studios to choose the shows which are able to be recorded. That time the court ruled that the rules had exceeded the FCC’s authority.

However, that case didn’t stop the right owners to fight against their own customers: in 2006, Sen. Ted Stevens tried to reintroduce the flag again, alongside with Sen. John E. Sununu trying to strike the similar amendment, which failed. It was about to become a major sudden and quiet loss for the public, but the bill never passed after House had adjourned. That was a reprieve until now, as the FCC recently adopted the ruling regarding SOC, allowing to disable some outputs on set-top boxes in order to implement the copy protection for high-value content.

Of course, the MPAA is now salivating over the victory, saying in their press release that this action is very important for consumers, as they will have greater access to watch recent HD movies at home. But the MPAA is the only one who could consider this a victory, or at least the victory for people trapped at home. Those include elderly, the physically challenged, and parents who are unable to afford babysitters, as they get an easier access to films and shows.

If you would like to know what will a world of TV DRM be look like now, it’s easy to imagine just looking at the DVD vs. the CD. The latter doesn’t have limitations and can be used anywhere worldwide, while the first one has encoded DRM so you can’t skip ads and legally make a back-up copy (if the local laws prohibit it), and also have to worry about region codes.

This guide will describe the basic steps to convert almost any video to avi xvid(for DVD Divx Players or portable players) or mp4 h264(for IpoD, PS3, Xbox 360, etc) or mkv h264(for computer playback) with optionable burned in / permanent / hardcoded subtitles using free software.

Convert
MKV to AVI, MKV to MP4, MP4 to AVI, MP4 to AVI, WMV to AVI, WMV to MP4, AVI to MP4, MOV to MP4, MOV to AVI

Tools required:
xvid4psp or avidemux
mkvextractgui or ogmdemuxer
(xvid4psp requires also ffdshow and avisynth)

Guide

Using Xvid4psp, easiest to use!
Open your video file (be sure to install ffdshow and avisynth first)
Open your subtitle file(extract subtitles from mkv files using mkvextracgui or ogmdemuxer)
Under Format choose the video profile, avi, mp4, mkv etc like choose AVI Hardware for DVD Divx Player playback or MP4 IpoD, PSP, PS3, Xbox360 video profiles.
Under Video Encoding click on the E-icon to change encoding settings, like change the output file size, under Encoding mode change to 2-pass size and set the size in MB. If you don't what size to choose use same as the source video or if you don't need a specific size change encoding mode to constant quality/quantizer mode.
Encode.

Using avidemux
Load your video file
Under Video choose the video codec, for avi choose xvid and if making mp4 or mkv choose x264
Under Video->Configure and under Encoding type change to Two Pass Video Size if you want to change the output file size. If you don't what size to choose use same as the source video or if you don't need a specific size change encoding type to constant quality/quantizer mode.
Under Video->Filters->Subtitle add the subtitle filter and load your srt,sub,ass file. (extract subtitles from mkv files using mkvextracgui or ogmdemuxer)
You might have to downresize the video resolution/frame size, for DVD Divx Player use a resolution under 720x576, for portable devices use the max resolution that it supports, for PS3, Xbox 360 yoú can keep HD resolution(1920x1080 or lower). Under Filters add the Resize filter and resize.
Under audio choose mp3 for DVD Divx Player playback, aac audio for mp4.
Set the output format, avi or mp4
Click Save to start the encoding, save the video with the file extension like video.avi or video.mp4

LEMON BATTERY

Creating a battery from a lemon is a common project in many science text books. Successfully creating one of these devices is not easy.

Batteries consist of two different metals suspended in an acidic solution. Copper and Zinc work well as the metals and the citric acid content of a lemon will provide the acidic solution.

Batteries like this will not be able to run a motor or energize most light bulbs. It is possible to produce a dim glow from an LED.

The picture at the top of this page shows a basic lemon battery, a lemon, copper penny and zinc coated nail.

The lemon : A large, fresh, "juicy" lemon works best.

The nail : Galvanized nails are coated in zinc. I used a 2" galvanized common nail.

The penny : Any copper coin will work. (Canadian pennies from 1960 - 2001 all worked)

Creating the battery
: Insert a penny into a cut on one side of the lemon. Push a galvanized nail into the other side of the lemon.

The nail and penny must not touch.

This is a single cell of a battery. The zinc nail and the copper penny are called electrodes. The lemon juice is called electrolyte.

All batteries have a "+" and "-" terminal. Electric current is a flow of atomic particles called electrons. Certain materials , called conductors, allow electrons to flow through them. Most metals (copper, iron) are good conductors of electricity. Electrons will flow from the "-" electrode of a battery, through a conductor, towards the "+" electrode of a battery. Volts (voltage) is a measure of the force moving the electrons. (High voltage is dangerous!)

I have connected a volt meter to our single cell lemon battery. The meter tells us this lemon battery is creating a voltage of 0.906 volts.

Unfortunately this battery will not produce enough current (flowing electrons) to light a bulb.

To solve this problem we can combine battery cells to create higher voltages. Building more lemon batteries and connecting them with a metal wire from "+" to "-" adds the voltage from each cell.

The two lemon batteries above, combine to produce a voltage of 1.788 volts. This combination still does not create enough current to light a small bulb. Note the red wire connecting the batteries is joined from "+" (penny) to "-" (galvanized nail).

Four lemon batteries create a voltage of 3.50 volts. We should be able to light up a small device like an LED (Light Emitting Diode).

Note the connecting wires go from "+" to "-" on each battery.

To turn on an LED you must determine the "+" and "-" connections. If you look closely at the red plastic base of an LED you will notice a "flat" spot (indicated by arrow above). The wire that comes out beside the flat spot must connect to the "-" side of a battery, the other wire to the "+" side.

Important information about LEDs
: LEDs are designed to work at very low voltages (~ 2V) and low currents. They will be damaged if connected to batteries rated at over 2 volts. LEDs require resistors to control current when used with batteries rated at over 2 volts. Lemon batteries produce low current. It is OK to connect an LED to a lemon battery.

In the above image, electrons flow from the "-" (nail) end of our lemon battery through the LED (making it glow) then back to the "+" (penny) end of the battery. This is an electronic circuit. The LED glows dimly with this configuration.

Improving your battery.

The quality of the copper and zinc can be a problem for a battery like this. Pennies in particular are rarely pure copper.

Try substituting a length of 14 gauge copper wire (common house wire) for the penny. Experiment with different lengths and configurations of electrodes. Other sources of zinc and copper may be found in the plumbing supply department of a hardware store.

The first thing you notice about Windows 7 after installation is that, it is more likely that you will not have to install any hardware driver, as most of it has already been included in the OS. A prepaid service called MBlaze allows users to browse few websites at no charge. Sistema Shyam Teleservices? mobile telephony arm MTS has launched this service.

Websites like Yahoo, Wikipedia, Makemytrip and few others can be surfed for free. MBlaze comes with speeds of up to 3.1 Mbps at charges of 10 paise per MB. You can recharge your account at retail outlets or through a web-based process.

What problems does Google Wave solve?

There are countless pundits and other tech gurus describing Google Wave as a disappointment, lately. Most of that seems to come from the fact that nobody seems to get what Wave is for. So they compare it to social media.

Is Wave the next Twitter? Nope. Is it the next Facebook? Nope. Is it going to replace Instant Messengers? Possibly, in some circumstances, but not any time soon.

I believe this is partly Google’s fault: they released Wave to geeks and hackers and social media folks first. But Wave is not a geek/hacker tool, or a social media tool, it’s a corporate tool that solves work problems (more on that later). On the other hand, they never claimed it would be a Facebook replacement or a Twitter killer. Google calls wave an “online tool for real-time communication and collaboration”. The way Google should have advertised Wave is: “it solves the problems with email”.

At Woobius, we’ve been working at resolving the problems with email for some time. Woobius is a solution to some of the problems of email within the construction industry. We’ve blogged and given talks about it. Perhaps that’s why it was immediately obvious to me and my team why Google Wave is awesome.
What’s the problem with email, anyway?

To most geeks, the main problem with email is spam. They don’t have a problem with online collaboration – they use Google Docs, Etherpad, Skitch, screen sharing tools, or any number of collaborative whiteboard applications. So the main problems for geeks are that they’re signed up to so many services that they get inundated with notifications, monthly newsletters, automated messages, and shreds of spam that manage to get through GMail’s spam filters. But when they want to collaborate on a document or picture, they can find the tools they need, most of the time.

But then again, most geeks don’t do all that much document-based collaboration, by email or otherwise. Programming doesn’t require a whole lot of collaboration, beyond that provided by source control tools and bug tracking system. Being Robert Scoble probably doesn’t require you to spend days working on a specification document for some finicky aspect of project X, or at least not very often, and he’s probably not the one collating everyone’s suggested changes and resubmitting the document for further review.

In your average corporate environment, though, this happens all the time. People work on documents, presentations, etc. They have lengthy discussions over email. Pieces of work bounce back and forth across one or multiple organisations for weeks before they’re finalised. People are brought on to the conversation late in the day. Attachments get lost. Inboxes fill up and emails bounce. It’s a major pain.

So what are the problems with email in a corporate environment, and what does Wave do to address them?

Problem 1: Collaborating on a piece of text

It’s hard to use email like you would use, say, Etherpad – to collaborate on a document that later needs to be sent out. Most such collaborations end up being done either via a Word document with change tracking, or, when they’re more ad-hoc, via a long thread of email with corrections coming in from every direction. It’s a nightmare to keep track of and collate all that feedback. Even giving the feedback is difficult sometimes: you have to quote the context and make sure your change is clearly outlined.

Google Wave resolves that by effectively integrating Etherpad’s features into the email client. Putting an email to an important client together, with feedback from the team, becomes a breeze.

Problem 2: Adding new people to the conversation

With a typical email thread, you can forward the whole thread to a new participant, or add them into the next reply, but they’ll only get a garbled, over-indented mess, in reverse chronological order. If you’ve ever been added late into an email thread that had already been going on for a week and involved two dozen replies, you know what I mean.

Google Wave solves that by giving exactly the same view to everyone, regardless of when they’ve been added.

Problem 3: Keeping added people added

Many times, when you add new people into a conversation, they get dropped again later, when someone replies to all from an earlier email that didn’t include the new participants. Sometimes it takes a while before you realise that key people have been dropped out of the conversation. That costs time and hassle both for the people who were dropped and those who weren’t.

Wave solves that by making “dropping people” an explicit action, rather than something you can do by mistake.

Problem 4: Attaching files

Most large companies have an email storage problem, so they limit the size of people’s mailboxes. Because of that, it’s not uncommon to see “Inbox full” bounces when sending large documents around. Not only that, but sending documents is iffy at best. The SMTP protocol doesn’t seem to be all that good at sending large files.

Now, to be fair, Wave will probably suffer from the same limitations as any HTTP upload applications – but that’s still a whole lot better than your average email. Sending emails over 10MB usually fails. Attaching a 10MB file to a Wave is no problem at all.

Problem 5: Lost attachments

When you reply to an email with an attachment, the attachment is dropped. This is a good thing with email, because it stops a single email thread from unnecessarily clogging up both the mail server storage and its bandwidth. Since the whole email is transmitted down the wire when you click “send”, this kind of limitation is unavoidable.

What this means, however, is that if you bring new people into a conversation, by adding them as recipients or by forwarding them the latest mail in the conversation, they won’t get any of the attachments. Not only that, but if you’re looking for that first attachment, and the conversation has been going on for weeks (and, like everyone else, you receive upwards of 50 relevant emails a day), finding that attachment can be quite difficult. If there were multiple attachments throughout the life of the discussion, gathering them all to send them to a new participant is exponentially more tedious.

With Wave’s model, however, the attachments stay there, where you put them. They’re only sent down the wire, from you to the email server, once. You never need to re-forward an attachment to someone. When you add new people to the conversation, they get access to all the attachments right away.

Problem 6: Multiple conversation branches

Email conversations are, basically, flat. If you try to have multiple branches of conversation in email you end up with a sordid mess. You might do that a few times in your life, but you quickly learn not to. But flattening everything has its own share of problems – every email ends up containing replies to several other emails. It becomes very difficult to track what was replied to and what wasn’t. And it’s hard to collate all the suggestions effectively.

Google Wave resolves this by allowing clear, obvious threading. Yes, if you use a lot of threading in an instant messaging context, it will be hard to manage. But within the typical email collaboration context, it will keep things a lot more clean and tidy than not having threading.

Problem 7: Small corrections

With email, if your only comment on someone’s email is to fix a dozen typos, you still have to do almost as much work as if you were making substantial changes to their proposed text. You need to quote the context, highlight which bit you corrected, and then rely on the other person applying your changes back to the original document (which they often forget to do — after all, it’s just a few typos).

With Wave, no such problem – you can just edit the original text and make those changes. If the person who submitted that document wants to review your changes, they can play them back.

Problem 8: Email to IM to Email

Instant Messaging is a powerful, useful technology that has proven its worth. But it’s not very well integrated with email. If you rely on your inbox to keep track of conversations, there’s still this gaping black hole of IM which is tracked somewhere else (if at all). GTalk tried to resolve that by storing IM conversations in your inbox – and that was a good step.

What Google Wave does, however, is much bolder: it recognises the fact that a lot of IM conversations, in corporate environments, begin with an email exchange that’s just getting too rapid. When you send more than 3 emails to the same person in one minute, it usually makes sense to either pick up the phone or IM them. With Google Wave, this doesn’t need to be a conscious decision: if you’re replying quickly, Wave smoothly turns into an IM-like platform. When your replies get slower again, it, once again smoothly, turns into an email-like platform.

This means that the whole conversation, whether email-like or IM-like, is tracked and searchable in the same place, and visible to all those who are invited to the conversation.
Conclusion

I believe that people who don’t see what Google Wave is for are simply looking at it from the wrong angle. Wave is not a social tool. It’s not Twitter, it’s not GTalk, it’s not Facebook. It was never designed to appeal to the crowds of geeks who are currently trying it out.

Wave is built for the corporate environment. It’s a tool for getting work done. And as far as those go, it’s an excellent tool, even at this very early stage.

It will probably take years before Wave fully penetrates large corporations and replaces the email systems everyone is used to. But it solves so many thorny problems with email that it might well manage to do so, where so many other tentative “email fixes” have failed.

In the meantime, we should stop judging it as a social tool and start looking at how we can use it for real work. Invite your colleagues to it, and get working.

* Turn OFF your Screen Saver, it will simply slow the conversion down by hours.
* Do not run any other program in the background while Advanced X Video Converter is running, especially if you have a slower computer.
* Re-boot the computer just BEFORE you start the conversion, in this way you have the best conditions as possible. Do not under estimate this step, I find it essential to guarantee a 100% perfect encode.

Step1 Add source video files.

* Click the "Add Task" button on the main window.

* Click "All to AVI" on the "Task Window".

Click the "Add File" button to add source files that you want to convert to AVI format. The source file could be DAT, AVI, DivX, Xvid, WMV, ASF and MPEG.

The format of VCD/SVCD is DAT. You can find the DAT files in the "MPEGAV" folder.

Step2 Set the output profile.

* Select the location where you want the output file to be saved.
* Click the "Edit Profile" button. Choose a video codec and an audio codec for the output AVI file (for advanced users). General users could just leave the default value.
* Usually you don't need to set width, height and frame rate as the application reads that from your source file. If it does not, check the resolution of the source file and enter the value manually.

Want to change output resolution? Modify width and height in the "Setting" area. Please note that if the source resolution is smaller than output's, the output will have tiny block as it's enlarged. For example, the output resolution is 640x480 while the source resolution is 320x240.

How do I convert DAT to DivX?
DivX/Xvid is one of the AVI codecs. To output DivX format, you must have installed DivX/Xvid codec (click here to download). On the "Settings" window, select a DivX/Xvid Codec from the drop-down list of "Video Compression Codec".

Step3 Click the "Start" button.

This should be the picture you'll get after you have added the task. You can add as many as you want and have then processed all together. Simply click the "Start" button to start conversion.

Advanced X Video Converter is a very good program. Its speed is above the average and generally it's a handy tool for all these video conversions you want to do fast and easy.

How to rip Dvd using Staxrip

Unzip the file.

Go to the Staxrip folder and run Staxrip.exe

Click Tools | External Applications

Install each one of the External Applications, until the status of each one says either OK or Unknown Version.

For me the following Pop-Up came, but since I have new versions of these programs, I am not worried. Just close this Dialog Box.

Now Staxrip is properly installed. Click Close on the External Applications Screen to go back to the main Staxrip Screen.

Let us now create a new PROFILE to encode movies to 1CD using the Xvid Codec and MP3 audio.

3) Drag the Resize Slider to 576 by XXX (My preferred size for 1CD rips – You can also set this to 640 by XXX if you prefer – Most 2CD rips are 640 by XXX)

1) Right-Click in a blank area in the Filters box, then Click Add to add a new filter

In the Add filters box -

1) Click Noise
2) Click Medium

NOTE : I use a Medium Filter most of the time, Low filter for a very clean DVD source and Heavy or Extreme Filter for a very Noisy Source (like Old DVDs)

Now Let us save this Project Template -

1) Click File
2) Click Save Project as Template...

Name you Template and Save it.

It is now time for our first rip – I will be encoding a Hindi Movie – Satya – Just follow along ...

Start Staxrip.

Then choose your template -

1) Click File
2) Click Template Projects
3) Select your custom template (Hindi_Movie in my case)

I use DVDdecrypter most of the time to copy all the dvd files onto the hard drive. The files for Satya are like this -

As you can see the Main movie files are VTS_01_1.VOB – VTS_01_5.VOB (VTS_01_0.VOB is junk most of the time).

These files have to be loaded into Staxrip.

In Staxrip, you can use the Assistant at the bottom to do most of the operations. Click the Assistant to open the source file.

Make sure Mode is set to “combine files”, then click ADD.

Browse to the (Satya) DVD folder.

1) Then select the VOB files. You can hold down the CONTROL-Key to select multiple files.
2) Then Click OPEN.

Click OK

DGIndex will start (in the background) and the Staxrip log will show that Audio is being extracted and the Index file is being created.

This will take a few minutes, so just wait for it to finish

The Input Video file has been loaded and the Audio file has also been loaded.

You can change the name of the Output file, using the Target Box.

1) This movie is very long, so I have lowered the Audio Bitrate to 64kbps (Do you remember how to Edit the Audio Bitrate?)

2) We need to check the Crop, so click the box marked 2

In this case, the AutoCrop did not work as expected, so I have to adjust the crop to remove the black bars on the top and bottom

Look for interlacing lines while the Crop screen is open. You will see them in areas of motion.

Click CLOSE to go back to the Staxrip Main Screen.

1) Do you see the Orange bar marked 1? This indicates a Aspect Ratio Error, and the Assistant at the bottom tells you how to fix it also.

2) Drag the Slider marked 2 to adjust the Aspect Ratio.

3) You remember that we have to De-interlace? Check the box marked 3 to enable de-interlacing.

Everything is now Fixed. Click NEXT to continue.

Next few screens involve Cutting and Compressibility Check. No need for either of them.

I do cut the Input Video sometimes to get some more video bitrate

I never run a Compressibility Test.

Click NEXT a few more times and add the JOB. Then Click START to run the job.

Now sit back for a few hours while the job is run. You can watch the Staxrip Log Window to see the status of the job.

At the end your AVI file should be ready.

Modify this guide slightly to make a 2CD rip

1) Set the target size to 1400 (change it from 700).

2) For 2CD rip, I mostly use 128kbps CBR MP3 audio. Click Profiles | Audio 1 | MP3 | CBR 128 kbps

3) Also Resize to 640 by XXX

Dont forget to save this as a Template for a 2CD rip, for easy use in the future.

Right Click on MP3 128 kbps
Select edit to edit your audio settings...

After that this screen will appear..here (at tick mark) u can set ur desired bitrate...

Whenever you plug a USB drive in your computer, a window will appear (if your autorun is enabled).

Don’t click on Ok , just choose ‘Cancel’.

Open your command prompt. Type ‘cmd’ in the run box or on the search panel if you are using vista

In the command prompt type the drive letter of your usb device and press enter. ex. C:\F: <— then press enter

Type dir /w/a and press enter. ex F:\ dir /w/a <— then press enter

This will display a list of the files in in your flash drive. Check if the following files present on your USB device.

* Autorun.inf
* Ravmon.exe
* New Folder.exe
* svchost.exe
* Heap41a
* or any other exe file that you find suspicious.

After Detecting Second Step Is Removing That Virus.

First run your system in safe mode, then go to your my computer properties and enable the system restore function.
then restart your computer and run in command prompt mode. in the command mode type the following.
ATTRIB virus name(ex:Autorun.inf) -H -S -R.
if the file is found in the Drive then give.

10 Reasons Why PCs Crash U Must Know

Fatal error: the system has become unstable or is busy," it says. "Enter to return to Windows or press Control-Alt-Delete to restart your computer. If you do this you will lose any unsaved information in all open applications."

You have just been struck by the Blue Screen of Death. Anyone who uses Mcft Windows will be familiar with this. What can you do? More importantly, how can you prevent it happening?

1 Hardware Conflict

The number one reason why Windows crashes is hardware conflict. Each hardware device communicates to other devices through an interrupt request channel (IRQ). These are supposed to be unique for each device.

For example, a printer usually connects internally on IRQ 7. The keyboard usually uses IRQ 1 and the floppy disk drive IRQ 6. Each device will try to hog a single IRQ for itself.

If there are a lot of devices, or if they are not installed properly, two of them may end up sharing the same IRQ number. When the user tries to use both devices at the same time, a crash can happen. The way to check if your computer has a hardware conflict is through the following route:

* Start-Settings-Control Panel-System-Device Manager.

Often if a device has a problem a yellow '!' appears next to its description in the Device Manager. Highlight Computer (in the Device Manager) and press Properties to see the IRQ numbers used by your computer. If the IRQ number appears twice, two devices may be using it.

Sometimes a device might share an IRQ with something described as 'IRQ holder for PCI steering'. This can be ignored. The best way to fix this problem is to remove the problem device and reinstall it.

Sometimes you may have to find more recent drivers on the internet to make the device function properly. A good resource is DriverGuide.com (printer drivers, cdrom drivers, modem drivers, sound drivers, mouse drivers, monitor drivers, etc.). If the device is a soundcard, or a modem, it can often be fixed by moving it to a different slot on the motherboard (be careful about opening your computer, as you may void the warranty).

When working inside a computer you should switch it off, unplug the mains lead and touch an unpainted metal surface to discharge any static electricity.

To be fair to Mcft, the problem with IRQ numbers is not of its making. It is a legacy problem going back to the first PC designs using the IBM 8086 chip. Initially there were only eight IRQs. Today there are 16 IRQs in a PC. It is easy to run out of them. There are plans to increase the number of IRQs in future designs.

2 Bad Ram

Ram (random-access memory) problems might bring on the blue screen of death with a message saying Fatal Exception Error. A fatal error indicates a serious hardware problem. Sometimes it may mean a part is damaged and will need replacing.

But a fatal error caused by Ram might be caused by a mismatch of chips. For example, mixing 70-nanosecond (70ns) Ram with 60ns Ram will usually force the computer to run all the Ram at the slower speed. This will often crash the machine if the Ram is overworked.

One way around this problem is to enter the BIOS settings and increase the wait state of the Ram. This can make it more stable. Another way to troubleshoot a suspected Ram problem is to rearrange the Ram chips on the motherboard, or take some of them out. Then try to repeat the circumstances that caused the crash. When handling Ram try not to touch the gold connections, as they can be easily damaged.

Parity error messages also refer to Ram. Modern Ram chips are either parity (ECC) or non parity (non-ECC). It is best not to mix the two types, as this can be a cause of trouble.

EMM386 error messages refer to memory problems but may not be connected to bad Ram. This may be due to free memory problems often linked to old Dos-based programmes.

3 BIOS settings

Every motherboard is supplied with a range of chipset settings that are decided in the factory. A common way to access these settings is to press the F2 or delete button during the first few seconds of a boot-up.

Once inside the BIOS, great care should be taken. It is a good idea to write down on a piece of paper all the settings that appear on the screen. That way, if you change something and the computer becomes more unstable, you will know what settings to revert to.

A common BIOS error concerns the CAS latency. This refers to the Ram. Older EDO (extended data out) Ram has a CAS latency of 3. Newer SDRam has a CAS latency of 2. Setting the wrong figure can cause the Ram to lock up and freeze the computer's display.

Mcft Windows is better at allocating IRQ numbers than any BIOS. If possible set the IRQ numbers to Auto in the BIOS. This will allow Windows to allocate the IRQ numbers (make sure the BIOS setting for Plug and Play OS is switched to 'yes' to allow Windows

Simple Port Forwarding Software --- Free

It has come to my attention that there is a free program out there called: "Simple Port Forwarding" and I have tested it myself to make sure it works. If you see the following message in your status bar: Your Not Connectable, Fix Now

This means that your not getting the full use of Bit Torrent. Even worse, if two users are both seeing this message they will not be able to connect at all. This slows down torrent speeds a lot.

And this message only comes up when your on a router and it's not setup to work well with BitTorrent, But this program will fix that. Here's the url:

(This list is under the second drop down menu that says, "Chose a special program".

Step 6. Once you have added all the ports you want to forward, you should check and delete any current port forwarding you no longer need.
(You can easily do this by clicking on the "View/Remove Current Ports" button.)

Step 7. Once finished click the Update Router button.
(Then sit back and watch the program do the work for you.)

Hint: Sometimes routers don’t respond on the first attempt. If you have any issues try the update router button one more time. If all else fails leave a message on the forums!

2nd Hint: You can check and make sure your port forwarding is working under the tools menu.

To remove ports that have been forwarded simply click on the "View/Remove Current Ports" button.
This will load the port forwarding page of your router where you can make changes as needed.

*Note: You don't have to keep the Simple Port Forwarding program open, once it sets up port forwarding you can close it.

That's about it just follow there guides and you should get connected and going much faster than you have in the past with BitTorrent.

Open a Command Prompt window and leave it open.
Close all open programs.
Click Start, Run and enter TASKMGR.EXE

Go to the Processes tab and End Process on Explorer.exe.
Leave Task Manager open.
Go back to the Command Prompt window and change to the directory the AVI (or other undeletable file) is located in.
At the command prompt type DEL where is the file you wish to delete.
Go back to Task Manager, click File, New Task and enter EXPLORER.EXE to restart the GUI shell.
Close Task Manager.

Or you can try this

Open Notepad.exe

Click File>Save As..>

locate the folder where ur undeletable file is

Choose 'All files' from the file type box

click once on the file u wanna delete so its name appears in the 'filename' box

put a " at the start and end of the filename
(the filename should have the extension of the undeletable file so it will overwrite it)

click save,

It should ask u to overwrite the existing file, choose yes and u can delete it as normal

Here's a manual way of doing it. I'll take this off once you put into your first post zain.

4. To move into a directory type: cd c:\*** (The stars stand for your folder)
5. If you cannot access the folder because it has spaces for example Program Files or Kazaa Lite folder you have to do the following. instead of typing in the full folder name only take the first 6 letters then put a ~ and then 1 without spaces. Example: cd c:\progra~1\kazaal~1
6. Once your in the folder the non-deletable file it in type in dir - a list will come up with everything inside.
7. Now to delete the file type in del ***.bmp, txt, jpg, avi, etc... And if the file name has spaces you would use the special 1st 6 letters followed by a ~ and a 1 rule. Example: if your file name was bad file.bmp you would type once in the specific folder thorugh command, del badfil~1.bmp and your file should be gone. Make sure to type in the correct extension.

Scratched CDs: An Easy & Cheap Way To Repair Them

In this tutorial I will show you how to repair scratched CDs that are giving you errors such as Mismatching CRCs, Read Errors, Sync Errors and Suspicious Positions. If you do it properly, your scratched CDs should then give you perfect rips with matching CRCs. Even badly scratched CDs can be repaired, as long as the reflective layer (label side) is not damaged.
Before you do it on an original CD, I suggest you practice on an old (badly) scratched CD-R first.

Whatever you do, do NOT buy the cd repair kits. They’re too expensive and pretty bad at doing what they’re supposed to do. When you’re done repairing, you’ll see light scratches on the CD. Don’t worry, they are way too small to affect playback or ripping in any way. If you want to get rid of them for aesthetic reasons, you can use finer grain sandpaper.

For this tutorial I used a cd my girlfriend brought from work and wanted me ro repair: This Is Tom Jones by Tom Jones. It’s actually a boxset where the 3 cds were extremely scratched; they would skip like crazy when played in the cd player and were impossible to rip. After repairing them, all 3 cds (74 songs) are ripping perfectly with all CRCs matching.
I’ve used EAC V0.99 prebeta 4 on a TOSHIBA ODD-DVD SD-R6372 drive. Rip in Secure mode, proper Read Offset Correction, Test & Copy. High error recovery quality.
What you need
—————–
- 1 scratched CD
- 3 to 10 minutes
- A bottle of Meguiar’s PlastX (clear plastic cleaner & polish).
- Emery paper: 1500 or 2000 Grit. I use the 3M Wetordry Automotive Sandpaper.
- A piece of cloth. I use an old scarf. You can use an old t-shirt, sock, towel..
- A piece of paper towel.
- Warm water

You can find the emery paper and the PlastX bottle at your local auto supply store. I bought my stuff at Canadian Tire and paid 10.49$ for the 296ml PlastX bottle and 2.99$ for five 3.66 inches by 9 inches sheets of emery paper. With that, you’ll have enough to fix over a hundred CDs.
Repairing

First, cut a small piece of emery paper, 1 inch by 1 inch will do, and you will be able to do a few CDs with that.
Soak it in warm water, and put a little bit of water on the cd with your finger.
Start sanding the cd in the motion shown below. This is for a badly scratched cd, you don’t have to do the whole cd if there are only a few scratches. Just do it where the scratches are.

Put a little bit of pressure when you’re sanding. When you think you’re done and scratches are gone, keep sanding but don’t put any pressure to get rid of the (small) scratches you may have done. I use the 1500 grit for sanding with pressure, and the 2000 grit without pressure to finish off.
Rinse the CD with warm water and dry it out with a paper towel.
Now, put a few drops of PlastX on the cd and polish it with a small piece of cloth until the PlastX gets absorbed by the cloth. To polish the whole surface, I put about 6 drops wich is more than enough.
Rinse the CD with warm water and dry it out with a paper towel.
Now the shiny surface of your CD should be shiny again. Look really close to see if there are any scratches left. If there are, you didn’t sand enough; repeat sanding and polishing.
Your CD should now rip properly.

uTorrent iPhone App Rejected by Apple, Goes Underground

Apple is known for the stringent guidelines it applies when deciding which software it allows in their App Store – BitTorrent is one of the things on their ban list. Apple argues that BitTorrent is often used to infringe copyrights and that such applications are a no go for the App Store, forcing developers to go underground.

µMonitor is a handy iPhone application that allows users to control their uTorrent client on the go. After putting months of hard work into getting the software ready for a public release, the developer Claudio was told by Apple that everything related to BitTorrent has been banned from their App Store.

“We’ve reviewed µMonitor and determined that we cannot post this version of your application to the App Store at this time because this category of applications is often used for the purpose of infringing third party rights. We have chosen to not publish this type of application to the App Store,” Apple wrote to the developer after a 4 month review process.

This is not the first time that Apple has excluded a BitTorrent-related product from its store. In May they also banned an application designed to remotely-control the Transmission BitTorrent client for the same reasons outlined above.

Interestingly Apple has no problem allowing Usenet related applications in their store. myNZB for example is an application that is available from the App Store although it’s similar in functionality to the BitTorrent apps that were rejected.

Despite Apple’s blockade, there is still a way to get µMonitor on your iPhone. Instead of throwing months of hard work overboard, µMonitor’s developer has recently decided to bypass the Apps Store and make the application available to ‘jailbroken’ iPhone users from the Cydia repository.

Thanks to Apple, uTorrent users who want to control their torrent via an iPhone application have no other option than to jailbreak their phone. Detailed instructions on how to get µMonitor working on your phone can be found on Claudio’s website.

400GB Optical Disc Invented By Pioneer.

Got a big archiving project you’ve been itching to do? Pioneer’s latest development could help you keep all your data in one nice, little circular package. The Japanese electronics maker has been working on an optical disc, which, like Blu-ray, can store 25GB of data in a single layer. But Pioneer says it’s one-upped the high-definition format to the sixteenth degree. The company announced today that it has a single disc that contains 16 layers of storage, at 25GB each. That adds up to 400GB of data capable of being stored on a single disc.

Blu-ray comes in single layer (25GB) and dual-layer (50GB) flavors. Pioneer does say that because the lens specification for reading the discs is similar to Blu-ray, “it is possible to maintain compatibility” between its disc and Blu-ray discs. That’s not saying it will be compatible, but it would make sense since Pioneer is one of the original Blu-ray Disc Association members. However, plans for that archiving project will have to be put on pause if you want to use this technology. Pioneer is going to demonstrate it at an industry conference next week, but for now the disc is read-only. Eventually, they’ll add write capability as well.

Simply open regedit and go here:

There, change the value of "EnableConnectionRateLimiting" to '0' to disable it. reboot after the change.

Everyone wants to know how to take a picture and replace the background or make it transparent.

Open your image, and double click on the "background" name in your layers pallette. This will turn it into a layer.

Open the extract tool: Image>Extract or Option/Alt+Cmd/Ctrl+X

1. Take the marker tool and trace around the image you want to extract. Keep the marker 1/2 way on the image and 1/2 on the background. For solid areas use a small brush, for softer areas like the loose hair, use a larger brush. Tip: to adjust the brush size use the [ and ] keys.

2. Now take the bucket tool and fill the area you want to keep.Click OK.

There will be a few areas that have been accidently deleted. You can clean up the image using the eraser and the history brush.

5. Use the "move tool" and move the image to a new background of your choice and place it anywhere you want.

6.Select a small brush size and "paint" back the image.Now you can place the image onto any background you wish.

Trick: Each gradient of layer must be of different side in order to have all the 4 pictures to be visible in your final product and the visiblity too depends on the length of dragging it.

1) Start with a background. 72dpi and RGB mode.

2) Add some text. Make sure you use a cool & appropriate font type. It may not work with all fonts

3) Add a layer style by clicking the little "f" at the bottom of the layers palette.

Add a dropshadow and a bevel, copy the settings shown here.

Note 2 things here that really make the glass "pop"

A. Change the contour, this gives the reflected look.
B. uncheck the global light and change the altitude to 70.

In this tutorial we will learn how to make a custom user bar to use in the signatures...

Aim : To Make a Photoshop CS user bar...

1) Make a new document with sizes [width:350 x height:19 ] and having a transparent background.

2) Make a suitable gradient and apply it.

3) Now get a logo, search in Google Images, find your logo and open it up in Photoshop.

4) Now it's time to remove your logo from the background, get the polygonal lasso tool and carefully cut it out.

5) Now go to Edit > Copy, then open the user bar document (the one where you applied a gradient), then create a new layer

and go to Edit > Paste.

6) Now with this layer selected go to Edit > Transform > Scale and resize your logo or reposition it if you wish.

7) Now right click on the layer and select Blending Options and give it a little outer glow with these settings:

8) Now make a new layer and get the Elliptical Marquee Tool and drag it from about point 1 to point 2.

9) Now get the Gradient Tool and use these settings:

and now drag it vertical from point 1 to point 2:

10) And now you have a nice light effect, create a new layer and fill it with a 45 degree scanline with opacity from 10% - 15%
if you don't have a 45 degree scanline make a new document with dimensions 3x3 with a transparent background and do a

maximum zoom,now get the pen tool (make shure your color is set to black) and draw what is done in this picture:

When you are done go to Edit > Define Pattern and name it what you want and click ok.
Now you can close this document because the pattern is permanently saved in Photoshop.

Photoshop Tutorial - Creating a Basic Forum Signature

I know that many people would love to have a signature of their own but lack the basic knowledge of Photoshop to create them. I know I did. Here is a very basic one that you can try. I made this especially for beginners so more experienced users may find the steps rather boring. Hope you enjoy it.

Software Used: Adobe Photoshop
Difficulty : Easy
Estimated Time: 5-10 minutes depending on skill.

Step 1:
--------

-Click File --> New and you should see a box pop up that looks like below. Edit the settings to look exactly like the picture:

- Open the picture you want to place on your signature. Then resize it to fit the dimensions of your signature which is 400x120 pixels. Most of the time, I just adjust the height and the width will follow suit. The image below should show you where you can change the image size.

Step 3
-------

- Press "Ctrl-A" to select the picture. The go to Edit --> Copy. Then click the original file you opened and Edit --> Paste it there. The picture below should show you the end result:

- Create a New Layer. A layer is another section above or below the current visible section that you can work on. The Pic below shows you an easy way to create it. Cleck on the button I circled to create a new Layer. The box above it is where all the layers of the file you are creating is stored.

- Click the Eyedropper Tool. This tool helps you select a certain color on the picture so you don't have to manually find it in the color pallatte. The pic below shows you which is the Eyedropper Tool.

- Click on a specific color on the picture you pasted on the signature file that you want to use as your background color. I selected the blue on the upper right hand corner. When you click on it, you will notice that your color selection will change from black and white to the color you selected (in this case, blue) and white. I have circled the section where you will see this change. NOTE: You can also change the color to a different color by clicking on the circled section to launch the Color Pallette.

- Now click the Paintbucket Tool (shown in the Pic below). NOTE: Sometimes this button might be a gradient button. In this case, Right-Click it and select the Paintbucket Tool.

- Click on the whitespace of your file to color its background with the color you selected earlier. You should see something looking like this now.

What has happened here is that you have colored a layer above the layer that you pasted the picture.

Step 9
-------

- We have to change the layer order to bring the original picture back on top of the background. In the Layer Box which is on your right, click Layer 1 (or the Layer with the picture you pasted) and drag it above Layer 2 or your background layer. The process should look like below.

- When you're done with the above process, you should have something looking like this.

- Now Right Click on the circled button to select the Smudge Tool. The Smudge Tool is a tool that is used to drag a certain color in the motion that follows the mouse.

- Once you have selected the smudge tool, click-drag-release the left mouse button on the boxed section of the picture. Keep doing this. The pic below is an example of how it will look.

Keep doing this until you get a satisfactory design.

Step 13

- Now to make the text, select the Text Tool (shown in the pic).

- Select a satisfactory font and change the color to any color you like. I chose white. The picture will show you the button you have to click to change the color.

Then click anywhere on the picture where you want to place the text. and type it in. You should be done in this case.

- NOTE: I did not use any of this in this signature BUT I do use it in others, so I will not cover this section in-depth. Select the Layer Style --> Blending Options to add some effects to the text. Layer Style Button is shown in the pic.

Step 16

- You should see a box pop-up like below. Select the effects you want to add some spice to your text. The one I usually use are the Shadow, Glow, Stroke and Bevel and Emboss options.

BINGO!!!!!

How To Kill Unresponsive Programs without The Task Manager

Windows is generally not known for its stability. Among other things there are frequent “Not Responding” applications. The reasons may vary from less RAM to Viruses to poorly designed applications. So what do you do when an application hangs up?

I bet you hit Ctrl+Alt+Del or fire up the task manager in some other way, reach for the application and choose “End Task”. Now there is nothing wrong with this approach, in fact as long as it gets the job done it doesn’t matter how you do it. However, ever had the situation where the task manager itself takes ages to load up? Of course it can happen because task manager does a lot of other things besides just ending tasks so it requires that much more resources. Apart from that, how about ending the hung applications with just a single click?
Yeah! you can do so. Its simple to achieve. Just follow along:

* Right click on the desktop and choose New > Shortcut

* In the dialog box that appears just type the following:
taskkill.exe /f /fi “status eq not responding”

* Give it a name of your choice

* Now just wait for something to start “Not Responding” and let loose your Task Killer!
So what did we do exactly? We just created a shortcut to run a command. The command being taskkill. Whenever you double click the shortcut you will invoke the said command which takes care of the rest. In particular the command we use says that kill all taskes whose status is equal to “not responding” and kill them forcefully (/f).

The /fi switch is used to filter and pinpoint the application to kill. We are using the Program’s status to filter the applications that are not responding and then kill them. You can filter(and thus kill) by memory usage (equal to, greater than, less than or not equal to), cpu time, window title and others.

After Installation check for the settings! Menu - "Settings" -> "General".

"Working Folder" -> Folder with resulting dvd structure files!

Go through all tabs. Most of the settings are selfexplaining. An important tab is "TV Format"! Set "Video Standard" for your region. "TV Screen" have to be set to "Automatic".

ConvertXToDVD don't support internal subtitle files within .mkv. You need to download the subtitle for your movie from the external subtitle collection (Check below) and put it in the same folder as the .mkv movie file.

Next step: Adding .mkv files with clicking on the green "+":

Check for the subtitles. There should be the entry "1 Subtitle Stream - 0 internal, 1 external". If you double click the movie you get a video preview window.

You are ready to "Convert". You can burn the files using Nero and "DVD Video" profile.

Subtitles are included in the .mkv container files of the movies. But there are some players which do not support this. Only use this link if you have problems with the subtitles!

A lot of people have adopted BitTorrent as the tool of choice to download movies and TV shows. However, if you are using a network router you might be facing painfully slow downloads (of around 10Kbps) because of a network configuration not properly set. Some think it’s a client thing and switch from one to another with no results.

The real problem is that some ports on your router are blocked by default and the solution is to open them up. Users find this out the hard way, because lots of FAQ lists out there don’t give enough detail to solve this issue. These simple but useful tips will increase download throughput from 10 to ~240 Kbps.

NOTE: The specific example below considers a Linksys router, but this should work for any other manufacturers' configuration including: D-Link, Netgear, etc. Linksys router, used as an example, is the Wireless-G WRT54G. Other models might have a slight different user interface, but should be very similar.

1) Open a web browser window and type your Default Gateway IP number in the address bar. It should be 192.168.1.1 in most cases, for Linksys, other manufacturers may vary, check the manual or the website for the manufacturer.

2) For Linksys, for example, to login to the router, leave username blank and type admin for the password (unless you have changed it before which is always advisable, for security).

3) Find the section that says Port Range Forwarding or similar

4) Add in the port range that you have set your BT client to use for Torrent files

5) Make sure you check both protocol boxes TCP and UDP as well as the Enable setting.

6) Have the forward address set as your internal IP address 192.168.1.72 in our case. To find yours, go to Start -> Run and type in cmd.

Microsoft intends to release Microsoft Office 2010 Technical Preview to invited guests who register to sign up for Office 2010 CTP Program only by July 2009. Office 2010 was previously known by codename Office 14 (taken cue from its version), and wrongly assume to be Office 2009. The setup installer of both 32bit (x86) and 64bit (x64) Office 2010 Technical Preview 1 (TP 1) has been leaked to BT network. The leaked Office 2010 Technical Preview 1 has the version of 14.0.4006.1010, a pre-trial version provided to premium Microsoft partners.
Its unclear whether it is the leaked Office 2010 TP1 build will be the version that is going to be released officially by

Microsoft in July. And its still unclear yet whether Microsoft will make available publicly for Office 2010 Beta downloads, which is said to be will be having 2 betas Beta 1 in July 2009 and another Beta 2 in November 2009. The betas is said to be different from Technical Preview, where TP is just meant as an engineering milestone for the development of Office 2010 and related products that leading to RTM that will reach in July 2009, according to Office 2010 IT Blog. Office 2010 is expected to RTM and released as final product in March 2010, with the exception of Exchange Server 2010, where Exchange Server 2010 beta already available from official download links.

The setup installer of the leaked download will install Microsoft Office Plus 2010 edition, with Access 2010, Excel 2010, InfoPath 2010, OneNote 2010, Outlook 2010, PowerPoint 2010, Publisher 2010, and Word 2010. Project Professional 2010, SharePoint Designer 2010 and Visio Professional 2010 are also included in the leaked RAR archive download. Office 2010 supports Windows XP SP3, Windows Vista, and Windows 7.

Important note is that Office2010 TP 1 is still in early stage of development, and may contain bugs, although most individual programs such as Word 2010 and Excel 2010 are usable in everyday life. Its also interesting to know that Office 2007, the predecessor of Office 2010, is version 12. Office 2010 will be version 14, skipping version 13, the number that Microsoft assumes may be not so lucky.
